Selinunte

From Trapani - 90 km

Selinunte, an ancient Greek city, is today the largest Archaeological Park in Europe, located in the municipality of Castelvetrano in the province of Trapani. It was a rich and powerful city, a bitter rival of Segesta. It became important thanks to the trading of wine, olive oil and wheat. It reached 80,000 inhabitants and covered a large territory.
Its temples are the only ones in Sicily to be decorated with sculptures. Four temples are located in the Acropolis including the oldest dating back to 570 B.C., three other temples are located on a hill outside the Acropolis.
The material used for the construction was extracted from the nearby quarries of Cusa. Around Selinunte there are some areas used as Necropolis.
